The Oxford and Bristol Surgical Trials Units will be running a three day surgical research training event (BOSTiC) on surgical trials for foundation, core and specialist trainees of all surgical specialities.

Students will work collaboratively to learn how to design and conduct RCTs in surgery that answer research questions of relevance to surgeons, patients and the NHS.

The BOSTiC 2022 course will take place on Wednesday 7th September to Friday 9th September 2022 at Worcester College, Oxford.

Course Description

The programme consists of three consecutive research training days and provides the opportunity for trainees to learn how to evaluate surgical interventions using rigorously designed and well conducted clinical studies.

Session themes will cover:

  • Why should we do RCTs                                                                      
  • The external and internal validity of RCTs                                      
  • Clinical and patient reported outcomes
  • Core outcome sets
  • Blinding in trials
  • Statistics for surgeons
  • Feasibility and pilot studies
  • Resource use in trials
  • Trial recruitment
  • Intervention complexity and measurement of fidelity

 

The course fee is £175 and covers all subsistence and one conference dinner. Accommodation, travel and the remaining dinner are not covered.
