This intensive 2-day online course offers a comprehensive overview of health economics and policy assessment. Designed for PhD students, researchers, health professionals, administrators, and executives, it provides crucial skills for data-driven health policy roles.

The curriculum covers theoretical foundations and practical applications, blending lectures, case studies, and hands-on data analysis using Stata software. Participants will learn to apply health economic tools to real-world decisions and interventions.

Key topics include:

Health economics and policy evaluation
Advanced evaluation techniques (interrupted time series, panel data, instrumental variables)
Agency problems and incentive structures in healthcare
Hospital competition and payment scheme impacts
Economic evaluation methods
Statistical analysis of health policies using patient datasets

By progressing from critical frameworks to practical analytical expertise, this course equips participants with state-of-the-art capabilities to conduct economic analyses that shape health policy and drive better population health outcomes. No prior knowledge or experience is necessary to enroll in this course. The course will be conducted using Stata software, which registration will be provided. Additionally, a half-day Stata training session is available for those unfamiliar with the software.

Many innovations in healthcare have the potential to vastly improve health outcomes, make healthcare more efficient and contribute to the global knowledge economy. However, innovations may also have downsides including limited uptake, failures of scale-up or sustainability, increases in inequities, and unanticipated inefficiencies. 

Building on the successful MSc in Translational Health Sciences at the University of Oxford, this 3-day Summer Academy explores the social science of healthcare innovation. It brings together faculty, alumni, current and prospective students to explore an interdisciplinary approach to addressing health challenges globally. 

The programme is designed for professionals, academics and industry leaders  
and focuses on healthcare innovations such as:

- Biotechnology
- Artificial Intelligence
- Medical devices

The programme has been developed by MSc Leads, Professor Trisha Greenhalgh, Dr Anne Ferrey and Dr Rachna Begh in liaison with our alumni.
