Detailed Description

The Food Climate Research Network (FCRN) conducts, synthesises, and communicates research at the intersection of food, climate, and broader sustainability issues. We work to inform and connect stakeholders with a common interest in understanding and building sustainable food systems.

The FCRN is based at the University of Oxford and is part of the Environmental Change Institute’s Food Systems Group and the Oxford Martin Programme on the Future of Food.  It was founded in 2005 by Tara Garnett who in 2015 was awarded the Premio Daniel Carasso Laureate award in recognition of her work on sustainable food systems.

Our principles of impartiality, academic rigour, and interdisciplinarity inform our vision of a fair, healthy and ethical food system, that sits within environmental limits.

Our mission is to provide decision-makers with the understanding and critical thinking that they need to take effective action on food system sustainability.

The FCRN’s activities include:

Keeping the food systems community informed

• Our weekly newsletter, Fodder, rounds up the latest journal articles, reports, books, news, jobs, opportunities and events in food sustainability.
• Our calendar of jobs, events and opportunities features a wide variety of opportunities from other organisations.

Synthesising research into accessible knowledge

• Our free educational website Foodsource explains key terms and concepts in food sustainability.
• Our searchable research library houses summaries of over 3000 papers, reports and books.

Conducting research

• We undertake interdisciplinary research into food systems and sustainability, identifying emerging or controversial issues of concern and differing perspectives among stakeholders. We produce one or two major reports each year as well as shorter discussion or briefing papers: see our reports and publications.

Providing a space for conversations between stakeholders

• Our blog series showcases the views and experiences of FCRN readers.

Our Google Group provides a space for FCRN readers to talk to each other, ask questions, start discussions and share information.
