Detailed Description
UKHDTN Short Course – Module 6: Experimental Methods and Hypersonic Flight Testing
This five-day, in-person module forms part of the UK Hypersonics Doctoral Training Network (UKHDTN) and focuses on experimental methods and hypersonic flight testing. Participants will hear from world-leading experts and take part in a combination of lectures, discussions, and hands-on experimental activities, gaining both theoretical insight and practical experience in hypersonic testing techniques.
Day 1 – Hypersonic Flight Testing Seminar
Day 1 is open to a wider audience and features invited lectures on current hypersonic flight programmes and experimental approaches. Attendees will gain insight into recent hypersonic flight missions, experimental methodologies, and developments in flight-testing.
Speakers include:
Flight Test 1| Dr Terry Cain (Gas Dynamics Ltd) – Reconstructing the HyShot Flights
Flight Test 2| Prof Alexandre Martin (KRUPS) – Hypersonic Flight Testing
Flight Test 3| Frank Scheuerpflug (DLR) – Sounding Rockets in Hypersonic Research
Days 2–5 – Experimental Programme The remaining days consist of rotating experimental sessions, including wind tunnel testing, shock tube experiments, boundary layer transition, ablation studies in the plasma wind tunnel, and laser diagnostics.
This part of the module is primarily intended for UKHDTN PhD students, with a limited number of places available for selected external PhD students, academics, and industry participants with relevant interests in hypersonic flight testing and experimental methods.
Networking Dinner
A networking dinner will be held at Linnacre College on the evening of Wednesday 22 July 2026, bringing together participants, speakers, academics, and industry representatives. Please indicate on the registration form if you wish to attend.
