Trinity Term 2025 - Tuesday Talks/DwD: Week 3

Description

Tuesday Talks/DwD: Week 3

13 May 2025

18:20-21:00, Reuben Dining Hall

Genetic Screening of Babies- is More Better?

Technological advances mean that sequencing a person’s genetic code is quicker and cheaper than ever, promising improved detection and earlier diagnoses. In the UK all newborns are currently screened for 9 treatable conditions but a ‘pilot’ is underway to screen for more than 200. Public discourses around genetics often invoke images of ‘blueprints’ or ‘instruction manuals’ but the predictive power of genetic findings is often weaker than this narrative suggests, and many babies will require years of investigations before their risk can be clarified. In her talk, AL will ask whether attempts to end ‘diagnostic odysseys’ that many babies with rare diseases currently face, might instead lead to ‘predictive odysseys’ for many more.

Speaker: Anneke Lucassen
