Harris Manchester Formal Exchange

Description

Participation in the Formal Exchange requires attendance at both the home and away legs. There are 15 places available, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.

 

The away leg at Harris Manchester College will take place on Monday, 09.03.2026 (Week 8), followed by the home leg at Reuben College on Thursday, 12.03.2026 (Week 8).

 

The total cost of participation is £50, covering £25 for each leg of the exchange.

 

In attending this event all ticket-holders agree to adhere to all terms & conditions as stated on the listing / linked via: T&C's | Reuben College, and to follow all reasonable instructions from College staff and event organisers. Formal Hall (sometimes known as 'Guest Night' at other colleges) offers a chance to get together with friends and colleagues to enjoy a beautifully prepared meal and get dressed up. Members are welcome to invite up to a max of 5 paying guests.

AI and Human Empowerment

 

Technology makes us wealthier, healthier, and more knowledgeable. But does it help us live richer and more fulfilling lives? Prof Chris Summerfield argues the dominant trend over the past 200 years has been for technology to strip people of their personal agency. In this talk, he will discuss this contention in the context of the 21st century AI revolution, and ask how we can train models to empower, rather than disempower, people.

 

To attend the dinner, you must attend the prior seminar.

The away leg at St John’s College will take place on Thursday Week 6 (26.02), followed by the home leg at Reuben College on Thursday Week 7 (05.03) (Women's History Month Cultural Dinner).

The total cost of participation is £30, covering £15 for each leg of the exchange.
