OxSTaR has been commissioned by the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deliver Virtual ½ Day Human Factors courses  for OUH staff.

This will align with the new National Patient Safety Syllabus.  All courses are fully funded & will take place virtually for up to 100 OUH staff per course. Please use your OUH log in when booking as further correspondance (MS Teams link, agenda & calendar invite) will be sent to your OUH email address

Course Description

Course Description

This 1/2 day course is run by experienced faculty and is suitable for clinical or non-clinical staff and aims to provide an introduction to the fundamentals of human factors in healthcare. The course introduces participants to basic human factors frameworks, including the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety (SEIPS), and focuses on practical applications in the workplace to improve understanding of systems in healthcare. The course is online but we use interactive technologies to improve engagement and allow participants the opportunity to use the methods we are teaching in real time.

Learning Objectives

  • Improve understanding of human factors principles
  • Introduce and explore a human factors framework (SEIPS)
  • Provide opportunities to practise applying SEIPS to real world examples

Course content

  • Definition and background of human factors
  • Human factors applied to healthcare
  • Importance of work place culture (including Just Culture tool)
  • Explanation of the SEIPS framework
  • Exercises using SEIPS
  • Plenty of opportunity for discussion and questions
